Checklist for Early Intervention

If your child has been diagnosed or there is a suspicion of a learning disability such as Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD), Intellectual Disability(ID) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) you may wish to access services.

The purpose of this checklist is to provide you with a guide to some questions that could help you think about your child’s needs, organise your thoughts and help to put into action a plan for Early Intervention Services. While this is a guide and you will have further questions, consider printing this checklist to help you begin your investigation, add your further questions which will be specific to your child and record the information for further reflection after the visits.

1. What kinds of intervention, therapy, and services do you provide?

2. Do you have a particular philosophy on working with children with a learning disability;

  • ASD
  • ID
  • ADHD

3. What experience do the teachers and/or therapists have in working with children with ASD/ID/ADHD?

4. What experience and qualifications does the person who supervises the program have?

5. How will my child’s progress with the therapists and teachers be monitored and reported?

6. How are parents involved with planning and delivery of the program?

7. What approach do you use to manage challenging behaviours?

8. Do you provide a parent training program?

9. How many hours of intervention service will my child get?

10. How much of this is in one-on-one time with my child and group time?

11. What opportunities will my child have to learn to socialise with other children?

12. Please describe a typical day or session.

13. What kinds of ongoing training do your full and part-time staff participate in?
